From further research it sounds like maybe the alternator (internal diode). RPMs change, it locks into 2nd gear... weird stuff.

I have just started seeing the speedo bouncing (and all sorts of OBD codes) while stopped and from what I have found, it may be as you suggested, the alternator. At the same time I did notice a whining coming from the right side of the engine compartment that changed with the speed of the motor (alternator is over there). It seems a failing rectifier/diode in the alternator may be allowing some of the ac current to leak into charging system (called a ripple). The output speed sensor seems to be sensitive to this ripple and reports movement.

I will let you know on Monday as I will be having my alternator replaced.

My alternator was shot. The mechanic noted the alternator was very noisy and became noisier as it warmed up. As the alternator warmed up, the amps output dropped quickly.

Yes, my battery seemed to be getting weaker . This morning when heading out, only got a click - click - click from the starter even though I had driven around for about an hour the day before with only the speedo weirdness.

On my way home, the speedo acted properly, that is, 0 mph when stopped regardless of the gear (no bouncing needle).
