Here's the day-by-day log, taken from notes that I made as we went. I have a bunch of pics, but they will have to wait until I edit them and figure out how to get the highlights posted.

7/14--7/15: OH to WI
Left from work 7/14 (Walbridge OH)
Stayed night in Schaumberg IL
Had 3.5 hour lunch with a college buddy 7/15 in Madison WI
Wife spent afternoon melting Discover card at Land's End outlet in Madison
Arrived at motel in Manitowok WI 7/15 eve
Two gas fill-ups--26.1 and 26.3 mpg per trip computer
611.1 elapsed miles so far

7/16--7/17--7/18 Vintage racing weekend at Road America, Elkhart Lake, WI
Total sensory overload--Can-Am cars, including 71 McLaren M8F team car, ex-Peter Revson--30 honkin' Trans-Am cars on the track at the same time--F5000 cars--display and parade of several Mark Donohue cars, including 73 Porsche 917/30KR Can-Am--in the paddock, walking right up to cars that I read about as a kid, including Dan Gurney's "McLeagle" McLaren M6B--exotic spectator cars in the parking lot, including more Ferraris than I've ever seen in one place
In the Road & Track tent, I chatted briefly with editor Matt Delorenzo about Phil Hill as I bought a book that collected some of Hill's best R & T articles. Nice to hear that my "impression from the cheap seats" of P. Hill as a really nice guy is accurate.
Also got to chat briefly with Peter Egan. Told him that if my wife sees me reading Road & Track and giggling, she asks me, "What has Egan done this time?", usually followed by, "Poor long-suffereng Barb." (his wife) He said that he hears a lot of that.
On Sunday, it rained cats and dogs for about 10 minutes at 3:00. The next group included some irreplacable 50 year old sports/racing cars, and about half declined to take the track. A guy in the following group could have profitted from their example, as his 94 Tyrrell 022 F1 car came back on the hook with both ends bashed. I'm guessing $10000+ to make it right.
1 gas fill-up--24.1 mpg
810.2 miles

7-19--across northern WI
pretty lake country
saw highly endangered whooping cranes (!) near Green Bay
stopped in Ashland WI
gas fill-up--28.6 mpg
1215.0 miles

7/20--WI to MN
Apostle Island area--very pretty coastal country
SS Meteor--the last of the whaleback lake freighters, on static display in Superior WI
nice scenic drive along lakeshore north of Duluth
Stopped in Grand Marais MN
Gas fill-up--29.6 mpg
1480.8 miles

7/21--MN to ON
very different landscape--ridge after ridge--spectacular lake views one after another
Stopped in Marathon ON--very sparse selection of food and accomodations
1753.9 miles

7/22--ON to MI
More spectacular scenery from Wawa to Sault Ste Marie
stopped in Paradise MI
gas fill-up--28.7 mpg
2103.7 miles

7/23--MI to OH
the long slog home
2 gas fill-ups--29.6 and 26.8 mpg
2573.6 miles

Half to 2/3rds of driving was top-down--hurray for windscreen
28-29 mpg at 60 mph on 2-lane blacktop; 26 mpg at 70-75 on expressway
lumbar-adjustable seats were perfectly fine for all-day driving
We just skimmed the surface in MN and ON and will be going back someday.

What a terrific trip!

Road America is on my Bucket List of tracks to drive.
I've enjoyed doing Laps at Watkins Glen, Pocono, Lime Rock and Bridgehampton.

There was "touring"--spectators driving their cars briskly on the track behind a pace car--during the lunch break every day. IIRC, it cost $75 per day if you pre-registered. I would like to give it a try once I get some better tires--H or V speed-rated--and a set of KYB shocks/struts installed.

Some of the guys with really hot cars were laying back from the pace car then letting 'er rip. One fellow with a 427 Cobra and another with a Viper GTS looked like they were having a really good time.

Excellent ride! Pics!

Oh yeah, got a ride for you next July to Carlisle, PA....it's not as long, but it's loads of fun! ;) See the Carlisle July 2011 post in the National Gatherings.

I am SO jealous! I have to get up to Road America for one of those events. I have been reading those guys you met for years and love them (Peter Egan is my hero!)

To meet and chat with them would be off the chart for me! Not to mention laps on the track would pretty awesome as well.

Sounds like an amazing trip!
